Have I mentioned that I really like Don McLean's "Vincent/Starry, Starry Night?" Because I do.

I fall asleep in my math class EVERY DAY! It is so bad. I get plenty of sleep at night, well, as much as I need (anywhere between 4 and 6 hours is just fine, thanks). It's not that the class is overly-boring, but dang! I haven't stayed awake for a full class in there in the past 3 weeks. I feel like a jerk, b/c there's no reason for me not to be able to keep my eyes open. It doesn't help that I sit right beside the window and when the sun is shining right on me...not only can I not see, but the warmth makes me sleepy. Note to self: don't sit right next to a window that faces east during a morning class. I'll remember that next time.

Today I downloaded a few songs that I hadn't heard for a long time. When I was younger, my sister and I used to listen to a Kenny G. and Michael Bolton song, "Don't Make Me Wait For Love." I don't know why, but we loved it. I remember dancing around to it and singing as loud as we could. Ok, it was just this past summer, I admit. LOL, no, I don't know how old we were, but it's been a while.

I went to a Wind Ensemble concert tonight. On the way out, I looked up at the sky, and the stars were absolutely amazing. It's pretty hard to see more than 2 or 3 stars on campus, but tonight, wow! I wanted to come home and lay on Stroup's barn and spend hours up there, just looking at the sky. ANYHOO, the reason I am saying this is b/c I started singing an old 70s song (imagine that) called Vincent/Starry, Starry Night, by Don McLean. He's not very well known for anything besides his classic "American Pie." I decided to come back to my room and download it, and when I listened to it, I started crying. I have cried more in the past few days than in the past months combined: twice. Ha ha. Anybody who knows me knows that I am not a big crier. But really, I don't know why I was so moved by the song, but I definitely was. I haven't heard it since I went to New York in 11th grade. It's about Vincent VanGogh and his "Starry Night" piece, which is one of my favorite works of art ("The Architect's Dream" by Thomas Cole takes the cake, by the way. Hands down, my favorite of all time.). So, if you want a beautiful, mellow song, I'd advise this as your next download.

So, I was walking back to the table with my tray tonight at dinner when I noticed there were a few "treasures" at my spot. I stopped dead in my tracks in disbelief. Melissa, Brittany, and Janeen were trying as hard as they could not to crack up. I proceeded, cautiously, to my chair and set my tray down where Betsy's should be. Yes, directly in front of me were two tiny baby carrots. They were horrible! I stood there saying, "oh, guys!" over and over, fighting back tears. Yeah, my eyes were welling up. Who knew I was so afraid of them? I surprised myself a little with that reaction. I was horrified and I didn't want to touch them. Ever! One was so misformed that it was actually standing up. The other was lying sideways, like normal carots, but there was NOTHING normal about them! They were hideously small, and I was standing in front of my chair, about to cry. It was not fun. Finally, I got up enough courage to move them out of the way, and I put them on Brittany's tray. They then began to dangle them infront of my face, make them talk to me in high-pitched voices, and basically just frighten the crap out of me. What friends I have...so blessed...just kidding, I have the coolest friends ever! :) Except for when they exploit my vulnerabilities. I didn't even give them the laxative brownies!! (Janeen ate one, but it had absolutely no effect on her. I was disappointed. She must have bowels of steel or something. That's my roommate: Robo-Belly.) All in all, dinner was an adventure.

Let the "quarter-life crisis" begin. I've been doing a lot of thinking about what I want to do with my life. Basically, I have all these idealistic, unrealistic (repetitive and redundant, aren't I?) dreams of going to some small, remote Hispanic village and ingratiating myself into the culture. I see small, dirty children running around barefoot, shouting in Spanish while the women of the "pueblo" carry their baskets to the river to socialize while they do the laundry for the week. I see myself wearing a long, colorful skirt and living in a hut of some sort. I want to teach them about health and hygiene and about a better way of life, yet I do not want to "Americanize" them. I know that in writing this, it probably appears as if I have no idea what is going on in the world and that, hello! there aren't many of these towns left. Not that I know of, I guess. I'm not shooting for decadent, primitive civilizations here or anything, just not as up to speed with the rest of the world. I think I could be very, very fulfilled in this. It's funny, though. All my life, I have wanted to live in a big city and partake in that lifestyle: the magnitude of people, the endless noise, the constant commotion. Yeah, that's appealing to me. This, however, is about as opposite as possbile from my remote Hispanic town. Why Hispanic? I've asked myself that a lot lately. why not China or Malaysia or somewhere in Africa or Asia? If i had a great answer to that question, I'd put it right about...here. But, I don't. I guess it's b/c i can speak the language (kind of) and I understand, let alone really like, the culture that is so different from my own. I had thought about going into medicine, actually. I know pretty much any country in the world will welcome you in with open arms if you have a degree in medicine and you want to help their people. I had planned on taking the entry level bio and chem classes next semester, but I couldn't get them to fit into my schedule. Plus, you were supposed to apply to the pre-med program by the end of your freshman year, and I decided not to apply until I had taken a class, that way if I hated it, I wouldn't be stuck. So, with not being able to take them until 2nd semester sophomore year...I'd be at least a good year behind schedule. Call it divine intervention or whatever, but as of now, I'm not going to be a doctor. Nursing, well...I've looked into that. I have never had any desire to be a nurse, really. Do I look like the type to be a nurse? No. :) So, there is my dilemna. What to do, what to do. I don't know, but rest assured I'll be writing more abot this topic.
